Making It Your New Year's Resolution To Increase Your Home Fire Safety
Despite plenty of good intentions, I’ve always
found it really difficult to keep my new year's resolutions! Looking back, it’s
quite clear to me that part of the issue is that my past resolutions have been
substantial lifestyle changes which are a little idealistic and hard to
achieve.
Does this sound familiar?
So I've come to the conclusion that this year, my
new year's resolution will be a more practical and feasible one - decreasing my
daily coffee intake. I cherish coffee, and giving up would cause exhausting
amounts of suffering, but I most certainly don't need the massive amount of
caffeine that presently runs through my system each day. With a little bit of
inspiration and tenacity, I'm optimistic I'll be capable of achieving this
goal.
Most people's new year's resolutions are focused
around being healthier in one way or another, which I think is great, but we
should all remember that taking small steps to realise a goal is much more
useful than biting off more than we can chew.
A practical resolution that I’d like to propose
for the coming new year is improving your home fire safety. There are some very
simple ways in which you can vastly improve the safety of you and your loved
ones. With the new year only a few weeks away, I’m going to take a look at ways
in which you can increase your family's safety through better home fire safety
practices.
Check electrical apparatus
The summer holidays is a perfect time to assess
all your electrical equipment, particularly those that are utilised more in
hotter weather like fans and a/c units. If you inspect an electrical device and
find that it has frayed cords or kinks, repair these as soon as you can because
they are possible fire hazards. Furthermore, the summer break is an ideal time
to clean the dust from fans and air conditioning units.
Fire detectors
The simplest and most helpful way to keep your
family safe at night is by having working fire detectors on each level of your
home. In a perfect world, fire detectors should also be installed outside each room
where somebody sleeps, and all fire detectors should be synced with each other;
so when one alarms goes off, they all do.
It is critical that you check that your fire
alarms are functioning by testing them each month. Generally, batteries will
have to be changed annually, and the life-span of a smoke detector is around 10
years, so if you aren't sure when your fire detectors were last replaced, just
have a look on the date of your fire detectors.
Fire escape plan
Having working fire detectors on each level of
your house is just the foundation of your home fire safety. It's vital that
every person in your home knows how to react if they’re awoken by a fire alarm
wailing in their ear. If you don’t have one already, the holidays serve as a
great time to construct a fire escape plan with all your family members.
Every home should also have a fire escape plan
that every occupant is familiar with. To ensure everyone understands all
aspects of your fire escape plan, put the plan on the fridge and rehearse a couple
of evacuation paths at least twice a year. The reason why fire escape plans are
so effective is because they identify two evacuation paths from each room, so
if one way is obstructed by fire, you can use the secondary route to escape to
safety.
Fire extinguishers and fire blankets
The most common cause of residential fires is
from leaving cooking unattended in the kitchen. Having a multi-purpose ABE Powder Fire Extinguisher and Fire
Blanket positioned near the entryway of the kitchen is strongly
encouraged by fire safety specialists. Fire Blankets are the best way to douse
a cooking fire, and an ABE Powder Fire Extinguisher will efficiently extinguish
most other types of household fires, including electrical fires.
ABE Powder Fire Extinguishers are also extremely
helpful if you need to evacuate your house in the event of a fire, so having
this kind of fire extinguisher on each floor of your home is strongly advised.
Just be careful that you follow the manufacturer's guidelines closely in
regards to servicing and maintenance.
Remove your Christmas tree prior to the new year
Authentic Christmas trees can become fire hazards
very quickly if you don't take proper care of them. It's advised that you plant
your tree in a bucket of water after purchasing it, and replenish the water
supplies each day. One Christmas tree will consume about a gallon of water each
day, so once Boxing Day has come and gone, remove and recycle your Christmas
tree to make sure it doesn't present any risks to you and your family.
Make it your New Year's resolution to make your
home as fire safe as possible. The practical steps described in the above will
help keep your family and your home safe from the threat of fire this holiday
season. If you have any questions about possible fire hazards around your
